What Really Happens When You Hit That “Boost” Button on LinkedIn

I boosted myself 🚀

There’s always plenty of chatter about that Boost button on LinkedIn. Some people love it. Others roll their eyes before they’ve even tried it. So, instead of listening to the noise, I decided to run a little experiment of my own to see what really happens when you hit that Boost button…

Step 1: Define Your Goals

The first thing LinkedIn asks you to do is decide what you want from your boost.

You can choose between:

💜 More Impressions – to get your post seen by more people

💜 More Engagement – to encourage likes, comments, and shares

Then, you move on to creating your audience.

Step 2: Know Your Audience

LinkedIn gives you great control over who sees your boosted post. You can drill down into:

  • Age brackets
  • Job titles
  • Location
  • Job functions
  • Profile languages

You can even choose to avoid people in certain categories, which helps make sure your content reaches exactly the right people — those who will genuinely connect with your message.

For my experiment, I targeted founders and business owners with teams of 1–10 people.

Step 3: Set Your Budget and Timeline

I ran my boost for 2 days over a weekend, with a total budget of ÂŁ16.00 (I spent ÂŁ15.73).

Create Valuable Content

Share content that is interesting, informative and relevant to your audience.  This will help build trust and establish you as an authority in your industry.

The Results

đź’ś +438 impressions

đź’ś +432 engagements

đź’ś +2 extra profile views

đź’ś ROI of ÂŁ45

Not bad for a quick weekend test run! 🙌

It’s worth noting that weekends tend to be quieter on LinkedIn, so I plan to run another boost on a weekday post to compare the difference.

My Experience

The process was very easy and user-friendly, even for first-timers. You can quickly set everything up, tweak your audience, and track your results.

While my figures weren’t record-breaking, they clearly showed that boosting can have its place if used strategically.

My Takeaway

We can’t expect social platforms to give us everything for free. A small paid push on the right post can go a long way — especially when you’ve got:

âś… A clear goal

âś… A strong post

âś… A proper call to action

Would I do it again? Yes — but selectively and strategically.

Before You Boost...

Make sure your LinkedIn profile and content are looking their best. If you’re investing in visibility, you want to be sure what people find represents you well.
